Italy: Sanctions Against Gender Discrimination Approved


Sanctions will now be enforced against employers who practice gender discrimination in terms of salary, career development, benefits or any other aspect of labor or retirement. The law, which implements a European Parliament directive to enforce the principle of equal opportunities and equal treatment of men and women in matters of employment and occupation, became effective February 20, 2010.
Implications for Employers

Employers should evaluate their benefit packages and career development structures to ensure compliance with the new regulation and avoid fines. Furthermore, pension funds will need to guarantee that no discrimination exists within the retirement plans they offer.
