The confidence factor for female executive leaders


The leadership studies and articles we read—and the behaviors of “great leaders” we observe—all indicate how crucial confidence is to executive leadership. And yet everything about the business environment today—the volatility of financial markets in recent years, the unknowns attached to globalization, the unpredictable turns that technology can take—undermines a sense of security. It’s hard for anyone who is paying close attention to feel that they’ve got it all under control.

Among rising female executives, some of whom may also be in the erratic throes of raising a family, the "impostor syndrome" is a hot topic. That is, the internal fear that one is about to be found out as unqualified. In truth, women leaders are very qualified: Korn/Ferry research into gender differences among executives found that women generally outscore men on three out of four measures used to single out high-potential business leaders.
