Capgemini sacks COO over Accor short-listing

Capgemini have taken the decision to dismiss their COO because he was named as a shortlisted candidate to the CEO position. I have commented on the goings on at Accor in another place but Capgemini seems to have reacted with schoolboy pique!

They should be delighted that their COO is of such a calibre as to be under serious consideration for a CEO position at a major multinational corporation. This gives him more credibility not less. The fact that he has shown interest in the position only reflects his ambition and his natural need not to turn down exciting opportunities that come along for him to run the show.

If he were given the position and he left, Capgemini should congratulate him and not stand in his way to a great career move. If he were not to go, his standing among Capgemini clients would be enhanced, given his high worth in the market.

Senior Capgemini management need to grow up. They do not sound like the rational team of consultants I would want to hire.

Capgemini, the Paris-based information technology services group, on Friday sacked Pierre Danon, its chief operating officer, after he had been named as a candidate to become the new chief executive of Accor.

The ousting of Mr Danon might leave the former BT executive stranded since a boardroom split at Accor had made it evident he was not the favourite for the hotel group's CEO position.

Capgemini said: “The necessary conditions to maintain his leadership position in the group could no longer be met.” It added that there was no plan to replace Mr Danon in the coming months.
