Nestlé becomes first of coffee's big four to launch 'fair trade' label


While it is laudable that Nestle have taken the lead in fair practices, being first is not the merit, doing it at all is the merit. It seems to have taken companies in the food sector way too long to move along down this road. Many minor steps, but nothing seems to stick, or to convince the many constituencies that need to be convinced.

Especially multinational companies, such as food, pharmaceutical, energy companies and others, desperately need governance input of all types, at the highest levels. Some have some, many have none, none have enough!

Nestlé yesterday became the first of the four dominant global coffee companies to launch a product with the "fair trade" label, amid some concerns that a proliferation of different marks would confuse consumers.

The move represents a shift in policy for Nestlé, which had previously warned that paying farmers above-market prices for coffee might encourage over-production and further declines in the global market price.
