One in three people approached in the street by sellers of potentially stolen goods brush their principles aside and take advantage of a bargain, according to a survey published today.
An estimated 6.5 million Britons have bought items from criminals on the street, collectively spending £247m, according to the study by Halifax Home Insurance.
Only one in five people who had bought goods in this way said they had tried to find out where they had come from, while 85% of people said they wouldn't care if the items appeared to have been stolen from someone's home.
Halifax Home Insurance warned people that by buying stolen goods they were encouraging burglary, which pushed up the cost of home insurance for all policyholders.
