Platini elected as new Uefa president


This is a good result!

I am not concerned about the age of the losing candidate, the incumbent, Lennart Johansson, but about his time at the same helm.

16 years is far too long and it is time for a change.

European football entered a new and unpredictable era on Friday when Michel Platini was voted in as the new Uefa president, ending the 16-year reign of the ageing Lennart Johansson amid mixed scenes of elation and disappointment.

Mr Platini, one of the most famous footballers of his era, both captained and coached the French national team and was crowned European Footballer of the Year three times during a glittering playing career. He beat Johansson by 27 votes to 23 as Europe’s national federations opted for the charismatic – some would say radical – Frenchman over the man who represented stability for almost a generation.

Mr Johansson is 77 and was seen by many federations as too old to serve for a fifth and final four-year term as head of European football’s governing body.
