Going Where Mother Led


I COME from a family of very strong women. My mother’s mother, Nana, was a strong individual and had lots of opinions and made them known. And my mother likewise. She brought in a lot of money for the family as a real estate broker, and she had an enormous personality.

My mother was the president of the Junior League, sometime in the late 1960s. She was doing a fund-raiser for a Christmas event in Dayton. She wanted to get a C.E.O. from a company in town to give money and set out to get his attention.

She was very pregnant with my little sister at the time. She showed up at his office and told his secretary that she really needed to talk to him. After being refused, she said she was willing to lie in front of his door until she saw him. She did get to see him, and the C.E.O. contributed to the event.
