'Having it all' is just a myth


Whoever said that "women could have it all" lied. So seems to be the consensus among many today following New South Wales Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt's decision not to renominate for the Ministry.

My female colleagues and friends lamented this proves yet again that society's structure, demands and expectations dictate that motherhood makes it impossible to have a truly successful career.

Talented, well-respected, a star candidate among ALP ranks and popular with her staff, Ms Tebbutt was often touted as one of the few female state politicians who would go far. Now she says that she has had to now choose family over career.
