Wolfowitz blames media for exit

Complaining about the messenger shows clearly that Mr. Wolfowitz has not learnt anything from his travails.

While it may be that the press fanned the smoke, it is clear that there was a fire here lit by Mr. Wolfowitz himself.

He put himself in the situation he found himself in by favoritism and nepotism and deserved to go, not with a nice press release, which he received through threats, but by the back door.

He should have been fired with a press release that outlined his misuse of his position and not allowed to go on a date chosen by him in the future.

The outgoing president of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz, has told the BBC an "overheated" atmosphere at the bank and in the media forced him to resign.

Mr Wolfowitz stood down after a scandal over his role in winning a new pay and promotion package for his girlfriend.

In an interview, Mr Wolfowitz said the bank's board did accept that he had acted ethically, and in good faith.

He leaves the bank on 30 June after a presidency that was controversial both at the beginning and at the end.
