Self-seeking leaders 'pave the way for fraud'


Too many top businesspeople and politicians are guilty of unethical actions that "pave the way for fraud", a leading anti-fraud watchdog claims today, writes Michael Peel.

Ros Wright, chairman of the Fraud Advisory Panel and a former Serious Fraud Office director, says that "self-seeking" by some high-profile figures has a "major cumulative impact" on people's behaviour in wider society.

The panel has strongly criticised the government for failing to adequately fund fraud detection and prevention, although Ms Wright has welcomed this month's spending review announcement of £28m of new investment.

In the panel's annual report, Ms Wright says too many morally dubious actions by politicians and executives are "judged by their impact on votes, sales or career prospects rather than by ethical criteria".
